Happy New Year!

Oh 2011, you are great already. You let me sleep in until 10:00am, you fed me well, gave us sunshine and rainbows for us to garden in, and a picnic in the park with friends to bring your first day to an end. Just lovely. Keep it up!

Our garden was in a sad state of neglect after our trip and the crazy rainstorms Long Beach got pelted with. The weeds went nuts, the birds ate our chard, and all our basil turned to sticks. Sad. This was how it started today:

After a whole lot of weeding, ripping up the dead plants, amending the soil with compost, planting new seedlings, building a bird deterrent system, and layering more mulch, it ended up looking like this (minus the bird deterrent fabric we later draped and secured over the poles):

Hopefully 2011 will bring us rainbow lights swiss chard, red cabbage, asian cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and garlic. Grow garden grow!
